Payment Gateway Security: What PCI-Adjacent Compliance Looks Like for Nepali Businesses
Full PCI-DSS compliance is a heavy standard built for large payment processors, but the underlying principles apply to any business handling customer payment data.
Never store what you don't need
The simplest security control: don't store card numbers or wallet credentials at all. Let the payment gateway handle that, and only store the transaction reference on your side.
Server-side verification, always
Never trust a payment "success" signal sent directly from the client browser — always verify the transaction server-side against the gateway's own API before marking an order as paid.
Logging and audit trails
Keep detailed logs of every payment callback and status change for dispute resolution — when a customer claims they paid and didn't receive their order, this is what settles it quickly instead of becoming a he-said-she-said situation.
HTTPS and basic hygiene
This sounds obvious but gets missed: every page touching payment data needs HTTPS, and third-party scripts on checkout pages should be minimized — each one is a potential data exposure point.
