A Practical Guide to IT Consultancy: What to Expect When You Hire an IT Consultant in Nepal

August 14, 2026By KTM IT Services Team

"IT consultancy" means different things to different firms. Here's what it means when you work with us, and what you should expect from anyone offering it.

It starts with your business, not our tech preferences

A consultant who recommends the same stack to every client regardless of context isn't consulting — they're selling. The first real deliverable of good IT consultancy is a clear picture of your actual constraints: budget, timeline, team's technical maturity, and growth plans.

What a proper engagement covers

  • Architecture review: is your current system going to survive 3x the users, or will it fall over?
  • Build vs. buy decisions: sometimes the right answer is a well-configured off-the-shelf tool, not custom software
  • Infrastructure planning: right-sizing hosting so you're not overpaying for capacity you don't need yet, or under-provisioning and risking downtime
  • Vendor and tool evaluation: an outside, non-commissioned opinion on tools you're already considering

Red flags to watch for

Be cautious of consultants who can't explain trade-offs in plain language, who push a single vendor's product regardless of fit, or who won't put recommendations in writing.

What good consultancy costs you (and saves you)

A few hours of proper architecture planning upfront routinely saves months of rework later — the most expensive mistakes we get called in to fix are ones that could have been avoided with one honest conversation at the start.

If you're about to commit budget to a system and want a second opinion first, contact us — we'll tell you plainly if you don't need us.
