IT Budget Planning for Nepali Businesses: A Realistic Framework

August 8, 2026By KTM IT Services Team

A common mistake we see: businesses budget for building software but not for the years of running it that follow.

The three buckets to plan for

Build cost (the initial project), run cost (hosting, monitoring, third-party service fees), and maintain cost (bug fixes, security patches, small ongoing improvements) — treating these as one lump sum leads to underfunded year two.

A rough rule of thumb

Budget an ongoing annual maintenance allocation as a percentage of the original build cost, not zero — systems that get no ongoing investment degrade in security and reliability over time.

Don't skip the audit line item

An annual security and performance review, even a light one, catches problems while they're cheap to fix rather than after they've caused an incident.

Plan for one unplanned thing

Something unexpected — a compliance requirement, a third-party API change, a scaling need — happens most years. A small contingency buffer avoids an emergency budget request every time.
