eSewa vs Khalti vs Fonepay: Which Payment Gateway Should Your Nepali Business Integrate First?
If you're launching an online store or booking platform in Nepal, you'll face this question early: which digital wallet do you integrate first?
Look at your actual customer base
eSewa has the deepest install base across general consumers. Khalti has strong traction with younger, urban users and does well for subscription-style products. Fonepay's QR network is what most in-store and semi-urban customers already use daily through their own bank apps. If you already run a physical shop, Fonepay QR is often the fastest win because customers scan the same code they use everywhere else.
Technical complexity is similar, not identical
All three require: initiating a payment session, redirecting or generating a QR, verifying the server-side callback signature, and reconciling the transaction against your order. The differences are in documentation quality and sandbox reliability — Fonepay's merchant API needs more careful handling of pending states than the others.
Our recommendation
Start with the gateway your existing customers already use, verified from real conversations, not assumptions. Then add the second and third once volume justifies the extra maintenance surface. We've built eCommerce platforms with all three wired in from day one when the budget allows it, and phased rollouts when it doesn't.
