API-First Development: Why We Design the API Before the App
Most delays we see in multi-platform projects trace back to one thing: the API was an afterthought, bolted on once the UI was already built.
What API-first actually means
Before writing a single screen, we define the endpoints, request/response shapes, and authentication flow as a contract. Frontend and backend work can then proceed in parallel against that agreed contract instead of one blocking the other.
Where this pays off most
Projects with both a web portal and a mobile app benefit the most — both clients consume the exact same API, so a feature only needs to be built once on the backend.
The trade-off
It takes more upfront planning time, which can feel slower in week one. That cost is repaid by week four, once both sides stop renegotiating the data format mid-build.
